BAT CHILD FOUND IN CAVE!
Theatre Guild, Inc. of Morristown bites into Bat Boy: The Musical
Look out all residents of East Tennessee. There has been a Bat Child spotted among our midst. He is Bat Boy of the hilarious and witty Bat Boy: The Musical being produced by the Theatre Guild, Inc. of Morristown. This production marks the kickoff of the Theatre Guilds 71st Season. With story and book by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, and music and lyrics by Laurence Keefe, Bat Boy: The Musical became an instant hit when it opened in 2001, winning Best Musical awards at both the Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards. Based on a story in the Weekly World News, this musical spoof about a half boy/half bat creature has had audiences rolling in the aisles since its critically-acclaimed Off-Broadway premiere. Things are not right in the aptly named town of Hope Falls, West Virginia. There is a horrible cattle plague looming over the ranchers. All the cows are dying, and no one can figure out what is causing this problem. To top that problem off, three smart-aleck kids climbed down into a cave and discovered something unspeakable, a hideous beast half-boy, half-bat. This discovery causes havoc among the community of Hope Falls.

Taken in by the empathetic wife of the local veterinarian, Bat Boy quickly learns to speak and act in civilized ways even falling in love with his mentor s daughter. Danger looms for the narrow-minded people of Hope Falls, however, as we learn the Bat Boys deep, dark secret. Fast-paced and hilarious, this off-kilter satire offers clever musical numbers, a hilarious plot, surprising twists, and a lesson in the agony of being different and accepting your inner beast!

Bat Boy is a pure delight, says Micah-Shane Brewer, Theatre Guild Artistic Director. It is a wonderfully written rock musical, full of genius wit and humor. This production takes great joy in spoofing other popular musicals of our time and will have audiences in stitches.

The cast of Bat Boy: The Musical includes Joe Beuerlein (Bat Boy), Joan Williams (Mrs. Parker), Drew Ogle (Dr. Parker), Elizabeth Wolfenbarger (Shelley), Logan Propst (Sheriff Reynolds), Sarah Grooms (Mayor Maggie), and an ensemble that includes Ashlea Bowes, Jackie Canney, Susan Christophel, Jessica Dozier, Cameron Gunnin, Sam Hawthorne, Scott Latham, Daniel Munson, Allison Perfetti, Kathy Smith, Freddie Thornton, and Josh Waddell. Brewer directs the production along with Lee Akins as the Music Director and Accompanist.

Bat Boy: The Musical will be performed on February 4, 5, 11, & 12 at 8:00p.m. and February 6 & 13 at 2:00p.m. Performances will be held at the Walters State Community College in the Inman Humanities Theatre on the Morristown Campus.

as Ophelia

By:, Citizen Tribune November 05, 2004 Experience a new approach to a classic with Shakespeare's "Hamlet," the fall production of the Music and Theatre Department at Walters State Community College.

Performances are scheduled Nov. 12-14 and Nov. 19-21 in the theatre of the Judge William H. Inman Humanities Complex on the Morristown campus.

"Hamlet," considered by many to be the best drama ever written, follows the struggles of a young prince dealing with the unexpected death of his father and the sudden remarriage of his mother to his father's brother-all happening against the backdrop of impending war with an invading army fast approaching.

The prince's action (and lack thereof) is complicated by visits from the ghost of his father. His monologues, some of the most quoted words in the English language, ponder suicide and the meaning of love.

Director Jerry Maloy, associate professor of music and theatre, directs the play. Fresh from studies at The Shakespeare Institute in London, Maloy brings Hamlet's struggles to a contemporary audience by moving the setting forward 700 years to 1940s Denmark. Instead of facing an obscure army, Hamlet's country is facing invading Nazi forces.

I want this play to be relevant. I want people to walk away and say "Hey, I got that one," Maloy said.

Freddie Thornton tackles the lead role. Thornton debuted on the Walters State stage last year in another Shakespeare classic, A Midsummer Night's Dream. He's backed by a cast of Walters State veterans, including Allison Perfetti as Ophelia; Josh Waddell as Claudius; Jared Kite as the ghost of Hamlet's father; Elizabeth Wolfenbarger as Hamlet's mother, the queen; Ed Hardin as Laertes; Alex Cooper as Horatio; and Jordy Bowen as Voltemand. The legendary bearers of bad news, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, are portrayed by Seth Horne and Eric Jones.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. on Nov. 12, 13, 19 and 20 and 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 14 and 21. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the Humanities Division at (423) 585-6947.

Excerpt from the:

Citizen Tribune
"Comedy no foolish story"
by Jamia Blazer, Entertainment Editor
Friday, Sept. 24, 2004
"As the story unfolds, we meet an array of dizzyingly silly characters. Snetsky, the sheepherder, seems to have misplaced her dozen sheep (of course, by her counting it's actually 14 sheep) and shrugs off her lack of knowledge with charisma. Jared Smith is the slapdash Dr. Zubritsky and Nancy Hope Major is his dulling wife. Together, the two are quite a colorful, ludicrous pair urgently hoping to spare their daughter of the cursed idiocy. Yet the moment we meet their daughter, Sophia, we realize beauty and brains are like water and oil in her case.  In the role of Sophia, Perfetti brings a skillful, balance of blank-eyed amusement and innocence with simple comic timing, lighting the stage with her graceful dull wittedness opposite Frank Williams as the
villain Gregor Yosekevitch. The love triangle brings to mind images of Dudley Do-Right and his love Nell battling the evil Snidely Whiplash."
